WHITE CREAM OF SORROW

Diary
Espoo, Finland, 2015

A constant flow of energy runs through the world, within us and beyond us, through every fragment of the universe. With belief and with practice we become able to read the signs around us and to enter a deep and boundless communication with our surroundings.

White Cream of Sorrow is an account of six days spent living alongside a dying plant I found in my studio. Over those days I documented the relationship closely, in drawings and short notes, and made a diary of it. What I learned from the plant told me a good deal about my own place in the world and my relations with other living beings.

The first evening alone with it in the studio stayed with me. Its presence was so strong that I understood I was the one in need of help in this relationship, not the plant — a humbling thought, given how pleased with myself I had been for buying a packet of fertiliser sticks.
