I am grappling with a sensation I cannot put into words: a state of mind that surrounds me with a magical air, a vibrating presence, something intangible that seems attached to everything around me. It is a kind of energy, a reminder that there is more here than meets the eye, and that it is asking to be spoken to. Meeting it is mesmerising and invigorating. My mind goes quiet, my pupils widen, the ordinary business of the day disappears, and a few seconds of absorption and sublime awe are left.

For some years now I have been looking for ways to cultivate this experience of the sublime and to make room for it. My current project, built around honey, comes from the same impulse. Why honey? At first it was intuition, but the further I went, the clearer it became: honey has a radiance and a density that hold the eye and ask for patience, and that patience prepares a deeper sense of presence. Beyond the religious stories that give honey its otherworldly character, it is these physical qualities that have held my attention.
